The temporomandibular joint connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull, which are in front of each ear. This hinge is responsible for movement, it lets you talk, chew, and yawn. Causes of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) include injury to the jaw, head or neck, whiplash, grinding or clenching of teeth, abnormal movement of the soft cushion or disc within the joint, arthritis in the joint or prolonged stress. Physical therapy can reduce the effects of TMD by using a variety of techniques including:education and ergonomic advice, jaw exercises, heat or ice therapy, manual therapy, movement of the TM joint to release scar tissue, retraining of proper jaw habits and postures and ultrasound or laser therapy.
