MANUAL THERAPY

Manual Therapy involves the use of the physiotherapists hands to mobilize or manipulate the joints of the spine and extremities, to create movement in nerve tissue or facilitate normal muscle tone. Many different techniques may be used to restore optimum motion and regain control of that movement. All physiotherapists at Hollyburn have completed post-graduate training in manual therapy.

Clinical Pilates with a Registered Physiotherapist

Clinical Pilates is a treatment tool that utilizes exercise science to re-educate your neuromotor system. Learn to breathe with ease, stabilize your spine and improve posture and alignment. Clinical Pilates allows you to off-load painful joints and find freedom of movement. Sessions usually start with mat based exercises, and then progress to therapeutic exercises on the reformer machine. All treatment sessions are one-on-one with a Registered Physiotherapist trained in clinical rehabilitation Pilates. The first session is 60 minutes in duration, and ideally the following one to two sessions should also be booked as 60 minute appointments. Please book your initial three to four sessions at the same time, to ensure the best chance of learning and integrating your new postural awareness into daily life. After the initial few sessions, you may choose either 30 minute or 60 minute appointments.

SPORTS INJURY TECHNIQUES

Sports injuries in children, teens and adults are welcome at Hollyburn Physiotherapy. Common injuries include ankle and knee sprains, patellofemoral syndrome (PFPS),runners knee, tendonosis, piriformis syndrome ,tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, rotator cuff tears and dislocations of the shoulder. Treatment will always include a thorough assessment and analysis of the cause and mechanism of injury followed by a recommended treatment program for return to sport.

A variety of treatment techniques including manual therapy, ultrasound, laser, electrical stimulation, therapeutic taping, kinesiotaping, and active exercise both at the clinic and at home may be prescribed. Our goal is to get you back to your favourite sporting activity as soon as it is safe to return.

IMS / ACUPUNCTURE

Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) is a dry needling technique That involves the insertion of acupuncture needles into taut muscle bands. This causes a 3-fold effect on the muscles

  1. There is a reflex relaxation and lengthening of taut muscle
  2. There is improved healing of injured tissue
  3. There is restoration of normal nerve function.

It is not uncommon to experience some aching in the treated muscles for a few hours after your treatment. The application of dry or moist heat can help to ease any discomfort.

You should experience an improvement in mobility after your treatment.

Acupuncture is a therapeutic method used to encourage natural healing, reduce pain and improve body function. Unlike IMS where needles are inserted directly into the muscles, acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles through the skin and tissue at specific points on the body.Physiotherapist with special certification in Acupuncture can use it to treat a variety of painful disorders both acute and chronic. In some cases only a few treatments are required. For complex or chronic conditions two treatments a week for several weeks may be recommended. More information may be found at this link for the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute.  www.afcinstitute.com

ATHLETIC TAPING

Physiotherapists and hand therapists make use of therapeutic taping to help support an injury while it heals. At Hollyburn our therapists are trained in K-Taping (using Kinesiotape) generally used for muscle re-education and allowing normal joint movement.

Athletic taping using a white adhesive tape is for injuries requiring more restriction of movement such as ankle sprains or plantar fasciitis.

Also available are leukotape used for taping the kneecap in patellofemoral pain and Powertape/Powerwrap a non adhesive combination tape that is waterproof and used in the NFL.

All taping supplies are available for purchase at the clinic.

POST SURGICAL REHABILITATION / ORTHOPAEDICS

Post surgical physiotherapy is an important part of your recovery after an operation. At Hollyburn we are recognized providers from O.A.S.I.S. for postoperative care in hip and knee replacements. We work closely together with your surgeon to provide optimal post operative rehabilitation for your surgery. Patients will have several visits covered by their provincial health care plan for post-op knee and hip replacement surgery. We can bill directly to Vancouver Coastal Health for these visits.

Other post-surgical conditions that require physiotherapy or hand therapy are wrist fractures, tendon repairs, Dupytren’s contractures, rotator cuff repairs, spinal decompression and laminectomy, ACL and meniscus repairs, ankle and foot surgery,

Most Orthopaedic and hand surgeons will refer their patients for physiotherapy or specialty hand therapy after an operation in order to obtain the best outcomes for the surgical procedure.

WOMEN'S HEALTH

Women’s Health is a category of treatment which covers pelvic floor physiotherapy (for men and women), pre and post partum care, issues related to childbirth, pelvic pain or instability, incontinence, prolapse, post surgical breast cancer treatment, and treatment of osteoporosis.

Treatment for these conditions requires a detailed examination conducted in a private treatment room.

With pelvic floor treatment an internal examination is performed to help us understand the factors causing your symptoms.

Your pelvic floor plays an integral part in supporting your internal organs, allowing proper breathing and control of the diaphragm and working in synergy with your deep abdominal layer (transversus)

You do not require a referral to book an appointment for treatment but many of our clients are referred by their GP’s or by specialists in Urology or Urogynecology.

VESTIBULAR REHABILITATION

Vestibular rehabilitation is an exercise based approach for the treatment of dizziness and balance problems. It involves a careful assessment of the factors causing the dizziness followed by specific treatment techniques and exercises designed specifically for each patient. The exercises when repeated help to decrease the nervous systems sensitivity to stimuli causing the episodes of dizziness. Balance and disequilibrium problems in the older population have been shown to respond well to progressive balance retraining and strengthening techniques.
